Even if they almost went extinct a while back, pixelated platformers have made a comeback in recent years, with many successful games being released to critical acclaim. As graphics engines get closer and closer to emulating reality, it would appear that gamers no longer care that much about the visual part, as long as the game is fun and it features some kind of interesting concept.

Tikotep Adventure is a classic platformer featuring the simplest gameplay mechanics, yet it manages to be extremely charming even so. Your whole purpose throughout the game is to kill enemies and try to get to the end of the level, which is obviously easier said than done. Using a bow and a few other tricks up your sleeve, the entire adventure depends on your skills as a pixelated warrior.

To begin with, a basic, but intriguing storyline starts to unfold in the first few minutes of gameplay. You play the role of a little Indian kid, who returns home with his grandparent after a hunt. As it turns out, the village is on fire, and there are rabid wolves roaming around and hurting people. This entire event is part of something greater, namely an ancient legend that talks about a great evil coming to Earth. Your quest is to stop this from happening and save everyone, which should not come as a surprise.

One of the most important aspects in a platformer like this is how the character responds to your input, because it’s mighty frustrating to die because the controls are not accurate. Thankfully, everything is as it should be in this case, especially if you happen to have a controller nearby. Tikotep can even perform the famous double-jump, which allows you to reach otherwise inaccessible places.

Another surprising characteristic of the game is the visual quality, which is way above what you might expect from an indie production with such a small development team. The pixel art is fantastic, and the new-age post-processing effects make everything look even more impressive. However, the one bad thing about this is the fact that you may not be able to spot some of the enemies because of the backgrounds, but that rarely happens anyway.

In the end, Tikotep Adventure shows great promise in almost all departments, which means that it can turn into quite the successful product. Thus, if you enjoy retro platformers and you are up for a challenge, you can’t go wrong by choosing this.
