Although they are hardly a problem anymore, sci-fi writers like to think that if people ever become an intergalactic species, piracy is going to make a comeback for some reason. Hence, the same is true when it comes to video games that deal with the subject, because most sandbox space sims allow you to terrorize the galaxy by attacking merchant ships and stealing their goods.

The Treasure Seekers of Lady Luck is a text-based adventure game in which you are free to choose how everything turns out both during and at the end of the story. The main gimmick rests with the fact that every decision affects the next event, and your character can pretty much change the whole narrative if you decide to say or do one thing instead of the other.

You begin by creating an alter-ego, although many of the character traits are set in stone from the beginning. However, you are free to choose both a name and a gender for your character, as well as a few other things that affect the story as a whole. After that, you jump from one event to the other, and you are constantly presented with multiple choices in order to decide what happens next.

As mentioned before, the whole thing takes place in space, and you are aboard the fastest starship in the galaxy, which is run by pirates. You can actually join the team and become a pirate yourself if that’s what you want, although there’s also the possibility to be an undercover cop trying to bring down the pirates. Obviously, the best part is that you can go back and see both routes if you wish to do so.

Since there are no graphics to speak of, the writing is the most important element, and it’s quite strong in most cases. There are some stale scenes every now and again that could have used more inventive writing, but as long as you are a sci-fi fan, the story is engaging enough from start to finish. Not only that, but most of the choices appear to have a substantial impact on the narrative.

While The Treasure Seekers of Lady Luck is definitely not for everyone, avid readers and role-play fans should get a kick out of the story and the characters. The plethora of choices bring you back for multiple playthroughs, even if some routes are fairly similar.
