The Station Demo

Sewers are not places you want to visit for any reason, unless they are not in use anymore and they have some sort of architectural value. Otherwise, there are all sorts of creepy things flowing and crawling down there, and they are most certainly not Pokemons. On the other hand, video games can take you anywhere, because your virtual self does not really care about how it smells.

The Station is a weird adventure game with RPG elements and a bit of action, in which you play the role of a new employee at the sewer maintenance department. Most of your time is spent exploring the sewer and confronting its dangers, although there are also a few puzzles you might have to tackle every now and again. Granted, they are obviously not very tough, even if they might require an open mind.

The most engaging part is that you can capture various creatures and use them in combat, which is a bit like Pokemon. You can even have more of them at once and change between them whenever you desire. However, the combat is a bit too simple to be challenging, especially since everything takes place in real time. Even so, there are other ways you can have fun with the game.

Your character has a device that can be thrown in order to activate levers or capture creatures, which comes in handy when you need to reach inaccessible items. Sometimes this is presented in the form of a puzzle, such as when you have to guide the device through a short maze before it reaches the right lever. There are a few others like this along the way, and that keeps the experience fresh.

As for the graphics, the game features retro pixel artwork, which looks great in the right circumstances, although there are a few problems if you decide to go fullscreen. The sound effects and the music are pretty nice as well, although nothing out of the ordinary. Unfortunately, there are some control issues, especially when it comes to attacking and movement.

In the end, The Station has quite a bit of potential, at least if the developer keeps adding content and improving the little things. Hence, if you are in the mood for something light and entertaining, this may very well be the answer.
