Haunted houses are fairly exciting in movies and video games, but there’s nothing like being in a spooky place yourself, especially if you are alone. Even if you are not a believer in the supernatural, human instinct kicks in whenever you are in a dark place and you fear threatened for some reason. Hence, the same atmosphere can be easily recreated in a video game with the right ingredients.

The Spell is a match-three game in which you also get to experience a few horror thrills, albeit nothing to keep you up at night. On top of that, there are some hidden object sequences as well, which keep the action from getting too repetitive. Even so, don’t expect a riveting experience, because most of your time is spent looking at colorful tiles.

The story revolves around two people who are trying to run away from a storm and end up taking shelter in what appears to be an abandoned house. However, the house in question is anything but abandoned, as the two soon find out when things start to get creepy. Your interaction with the supernatural elements is non-existent, on the other hand, so don’t expect a true survival experience.

As mentioned before, there are a few hidden object sequences that mix things around every now and again, but they are very repetitive. In fact, you have to tackle the same images sometimes, except that you have to find different items. This gets on your nerves after a while, especially because it stops being challenging after the first time you see the images.

The graphics are decent, depending on what your expectations are. It’s nice that there’s a fairly big collection of tiles, and it’s even nicer that they keep changing on a regular basis. Even the hidden object images are nicely designed when it comes to the artwork. Not much can be said about the sound department, although at least that’s not so important in the grand scheme of things.

In spite of its shortcomings in regards to the hidden object scenes, The Spell is still a match-three game in the end, and that part of the game is solid. Hence, if you like moving tiles around and scoring points for impressive combos, The Spell should keep you busy for a while.
