The Spell Demo

It’s pretty difficult to include magic spells in video games without making them feel underpowered, especially since there must be some kind of limit when it comes to how much damage the player deal and how often they can cast spells. On the other hand, there are ingenious ways to include magic into the action, as well as make simple spells appear much more effective.

The Spell is an intriguing project currently in the making that promises a much more enjoyable and hands-on magic system, which should help a lot with the overall atmosphere and general appeal. Granted, the game is in a very rough state at the moment, so most of the features are not yet implemented. Even so, there’s clearly a lot of potential at play, so you should definitely keep an eye on the project.

The story is fairly intriguing too, and it follows the exploits of a wizard by the name of Arik, who goes on a quest to stop an invading army from destroying his kingdom. Naturally, he is actually an immortal being with untold powers, which allows him to face an entire army by himself. It won’t easy, on the other hand, so it still takes a lot of skill to tackle groups of enemies.

Your character can quickly switch between a handful of spells, which have different effects on the environment and the enemies. Hence, fire can be used to set everything ablaze, and it’s also possible to use the power of wind in order to throw objects and even opponents around like leaves. All of these options make for a very intriguing gameplay, not to mention fluid and rarely predictable.

The game looks a tad too basic for this day and age, but most of this is because the artwork is not that important at this stage in the development process. However, the top-down perspective is definitely well-chosen, since it’s much easier to make full use of the spells this way. The textures are going to be improved later on, especially if the project is fully funded on Kickstarter by then.

All things considered, The Spell is not quite there yet, but it’s definitely on the path to success. It needs more work and better graphics, and you can help the developers by participating in the game’s Kickstarter project.
