Searching for treasure is a common theme in adventure stories, and sometimes in video games as well. The thrill of being on the trail is enough to keep people engaged for hours on end, especially if the writers do a good job with the plot and the characters. Naturally, pirates are quite often the subject of treasure hunts, because of their supposed hobby of stashing loot at the bottom of the sea.
The Pirate Mermaid is an interactive visual novel that puts you in the role of a pirate with a simple goal: Find the mermaids’ treasure. The game features more choices than your typical visual novel, and you can also customize your character a bit more in the beginning. However, the fans of the genre should feel right at home from the first minutes of gameplay.
To begin with, the whole story revolves around a mythical treasure that is guarded by mermaids. The main character becomes a pirate in order to get this treasure, but as you might expect, a storm destroys the ship and sends her adrift on the cold ocean. Thankfully, a sorcerer rescues her, and he offers her a contract that could benefit them both. Hence, the pirate gets turned into a mermaid, but she must also retrieve a red vial to the sorcerer, otherwise she is turned into a lobster forever.
Since interaction is a big part of the game, you are expected to make choices on a regular basis, many of which affect the course of the plot one way or another. To top things off, there are multiple romantic partners you can choose from as well, which means that you can witness different events if you go through the story more than once. Granted, this is still a demo at this point, but it’s looking really promising.
As for the artwork, the images are really colorful and detailed, exactly as they should be in a visual novel. You can tell that quite a bit of work has gone into the backgrounds and the characters, given the fact that most of them come with multiple poses as well. The interface is enjoyable as well, and there’s a real sense of adventure throughout the story.
Even if The Pirate Mermaid is not quite done yet, it certainly has potential, and it’s more polished than most indie visual novels out there. Hence, it’s worth a shot if you are a fan of the genre.
