The Miners Demo

Mining is a pretty popular activity in video games nowadays, especially since most sandbox titles allow you to dig and use the resources you stumble upon to craft items or even build structures. However, the idea is certainly not new, because it can be found in very old video games as well, albeit in a much simpler form, given the limitations of the era.

The Miners is a 2D digging game in which your only goal is to get as many precious stones as you can and compete for the big prize by beating the enemy team. You have a handful of miners at your disposal, and they can all be used at the same time to dig tunnels and look for rubies, gold and sapphires. However, they are not invincible, and there are many obstacles to overcome along the way.

The action takes place on a planet very rich in precious metals and stones, and the company that holds all the mines decides to hold the competition one day. Thus, the team that gathers the most gems wins one of the richest mines on the planet for themselves, which is quite the prize. Naturally, the competition is fierce, and it’s not very friendly either.

The two teams start on opposite sides of the map every time, and each map is different when it comes to topology and the kind of obstacles you have to overcome. There are ghosts, skeletons, deep pits of water and various other monsters that may hurt your miners, so it’s important to watch out where you dig. Meeting a member of the opposing team also ends in violence, which can be quite damaging.

As for the graphics, the game is fully two-dimensional, so don’t expect anything too great in this regard. However, the tiles are quite nice, not to mention the fact that each map is different somehow. The sprites are pretty basic and unimpressive, but that’s not relevant to the gameplay mechanics, so they shouldn’t hurt the overall experience.

In the end, The Miners seems to have everything it needs to provide you with a few hours of fun and entertainment. On the other hand, it’s probably more appealing to those who are familiar with the old Amiga game called Diggers, because modern gamers might not appreciate it as much.
