Murder mysteries are always intriguing if they are done right, in spite of the fact that there are very few new ideas in the genre after so much time. It’s still possible to create interesting characters and situations, on the other hand, and there’s enough creativity out there to keep the genre alive for much longer. Even older ideas can be revamped and improved to provide the fans with new thrills.

The Masquerade Killer is an interactive visual novel game with an intriguing mystery that drives the plot and keeps you engaged. The whole thing takes in a Victorian era setting, so it’s a bit different from the rest of the visual novels out there. However, the focus is on gathering clues by talking to various people, not to mention the fact that romance enters the picture later on in the game as well.   The main character’s name is Elvia, and she can be hired as a private detective that investigates strange cases, although she is also involved in a few illegal things. In this case, the daughter of an important man is murdered, but no one is to find out about it until the guilty one is found. Hence, Elvira must pose as the victim in the high society until she tracks down the killer.

Although visual novels are not expected to feature state-of-the-art graphics, the artwork has to be detailed and flashy, especially since it’s static and there’s nothing to distract the eyes. Thankfully, the artwork in The Masquerade Killer is gorgeous, and you can tell that the artists have put a lot of work into both the backgrounds and the characters, most of which feature multiple poses as well.   The choices you make along the way affect the ending, and there are many possible ways the story can come to an end. Elvira’s fate is in the balance too, so there’s more to the game than the crime mystery. There are many interesting characters to meet along the way, some of which may prove to be a good romantic choice for you.

The Masquerade Killer is not ready yet, but it certainly features all the right elements to keep you engaged from start to finish. The artwork is great, which helps a lot with the atmosphere and the general mood throughout the game.
