Being on the waiting list for the crown is no easy task, especially since it’s usually your father that needs to hand it down to you. Thankfully, you do not need to worry about grief in video games, nor about many other things that are suddenly just numbers on a screen. In part, this is why the fantasy genre is so successful, especially if you enjoy playing the role of brave warriors and powerful wizards.
The Lost Heir 2: Forging a Kingdom is a text-based adventure game in which you have to play the role of a prince or a princess who loses her family to a sudden poison attack. In order to reclaim the throne that’s rightfully yours, you must travel the realm and seek allies, although much more than that happens along the way. Given the fact that all you have at your disposal is text and your imagination, the journey should differ for every player.
The story is obviously related to the one from the first episode in the trilogy, yet you can still play it even if you haven’t touched the first part. However, you’ll have to decide how that bit of the story went by quickly answering a few questions in the beginning. Hence, this second part revolves around continuing your journey throughout the realm, in search of romance, allies and glory.
Just like in an RPG, your character can improve his abilities by practicing them. However, the method is not as direct as it is in classic RPGs, since you are usually awarded points for choosing to do one thing or the other. Still, you can fail to complete certain actions if your skill is not great enough in that field. This makes the experience more dynamic, as well as more engaging.
Speaking of which, the lack of graphics shouldn’t bother anyone, at least if you’re in it for the story. Each scene is properly detailed and there are always multiple choices to pick from, each one of which goes in a separate direction. Not only that, but you can even interact with other characters and get closer to them, or even choose an evil route and do everything by yourself while wreaking havoc with your demons.
In the end, The Lost Heir 2: Forging a Kingdom is clearly not a sure hit with everyone, but there should be plenty of people out there ready to appreciate its depth and the freedom it offers the players. The lack of graphics lets your imagination create something unique every time.
