Although the Mayans often engaged in human sacrifice through heart removal in an attempt to please blood-hungry deities, somehow many modern people seem to believe that they possessed incredible knowledge and technology, and were even able to predict the end of the world. Hence, there are many movies and adventure games that present the Mayans as humans way ahead of their time, all while ignoring the mass decapitations taking place in the background whenever the Moon was in a special place in the sky.
The Legacy: Prisoner is a hidden object adventure game in which you play the role of a museum worker tasked with taking care of the items on display overnight. Although the game starts pretty rooted in reality, things take a turn for the fantastical after only a few minutes, so the adventure is anything but boring. On the other hand, the puzzles are as common as ever, which can be a bit disappointing.
As mentioned before, the story is not very unusual at first, since you play the role of Diana, a museum employee working the nightshift. Things take a turn for the worse when a thief tries to steal a Mayan bust from the museum, and Diana goes in pursuit. However, the pursuit actually takes her to a different world, and she must both find the thief and make her way back to her reality.
The underlying gameplay formula is as old as the genre itself, which should make it easy for the fans to get right down to the action. Hence, you start every scene by looking around for useful items, after which you combine these items in order to unlock doors or complete various puzzles. Naturally, Diana often throws away items after using them only once, in spite of the fact that many could come in handy in other situations as well.
From a technical point of view, The Legacy: Prisoner is very simple as well, since it only features static scenes with some hotspots you can click on to zoom in. However, the artwork itself is very impressive, so the adventure feels very engaging most of the time. There is voice acting for every dialog line, as well as a few cutscenes to show you important moments throughout the story.
In the end, even if The Legacy: Prisoner does not take any risks with its story or the gameplay, the experience as a whole is as enjoyable as it can get. Thus, it’s worth a shot if you are a HOPA veteran and you are up for a new journey.
