Adventure is something most people seem to be yearning for, yet few take the chance to indulge their instincts. The reasons are many and pretty solid in most cases, because it’s definitely not easy to put oneself in harm’s way just to feel the thrill of adventure. Thus, it is a lot more convenient and simple to imagine the whole thing instead, using a good book or a video game.
The Last Dream: Developer's Edition is a pretty sad point-and-click adventure game in which you get the chance to explore a variety of interesting locations and interact with all sorts of magical items. Most of the mechanics are classic and straightforward, since you mainly have to find items or figure out how to combine them, but there are some original ideas at work as well.
The story is a bit sad right from the start, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have fun with it. In short, you play the role of a man whose wife died in a car accident not long ago. He sees her ghost calling him for some reason, and one day he decides to follow her clues to unravel the mystery. The journey takes you to a variety of interesting places, and you also have the opportunity to meet some curious characters along the way, including a helpful cat that becomes your companion.
Most of your time is going to be spent analyzing the environment and finding useful items that unlock the way further. However, some of these objects can only be acquired by completing a variety of mini-games, all of which are designed to put your mind to work. They are not very difficult, thankfully, but they provide enough of a challenge to keep you entertained.
As far as the visual design is concerned, the graphics are about as pretty as they can be under the circumstances. The environments are static and your view is fixed, but that doesn’t mean there’s nothing to look at. In fact, the details are almost overwhelming in most cases, thanks to the hand-drawn artwork. The cutscenes are live action, making the entire experience feel a lot more like an interactive movie.
The Last Dream: Developer's Edition delivers in most regards, although this is still a very casual approach to the genre. However, as long as you do not mind the facile puzzles and the lack of a mature storyline, this can still be the perfect way to spend your spare time.
