The Hunt for Red Panda is a puzzle game in which your task is to restore famous paintings by pointing out the out of place objects in them. There are multiple tools you can use to repair the damage, but that’s only a way for the game to slow you down and add some extra effort to the mix, because you do not actually get to use the said tools in different ways.

Most paintings have all sorts of obvious modifications, such as headphones on Renaissance characters, or TV sets in medieval landscapes. However, there are also small details you have to work really hard in order to notice, which makes the experience that much more demanding. Granted, you can end the round whenever you feel like you’ve found enough clues to move on.

As the story unfolds, you get closer and closer to the vandal that keeps messing with the paintings. He leaves all sorts of clues behind, but it still takes a long time to catch up with him, probably because he is very good at avoiding security measures. On the other hand, that means you get to work on more paintings, and it’s a great way to learn about real art history while you are at it.

The gameplay can be a tad disorienting at first, especially since you have to switch between tools depending on the case, but you’ll quickly get used to it. It doesn’t really matter how you use the said tools, because all that’s required of you is to use everything as a brush or an eraser. Hence, you obviously don’t need to know how to paint in order to perform the restorations.

When it’s all said and done, The Hunt for Red Panda is clearly not for everyone, but it can be the perfect choice for those who have a lot of time on their hands. It also helps if you have some sort of interest in art.
