Being a superhero is a dream most children share, especially thanks to all the comic books, video games and blockbuster movies that approach the subject. Naturally, video games are much better at this, given the fact that they allow the players to be the hero and use the powers themselves instead of reading or watching someone else doing.

The Hero Unmasked! is a text-based adventure game in which you get to play the role of a man as he tries to save his brother from certain death. The goal is actually to impersonate his superhero persona, Swashbuckler, in order to trick the city’s population and make sure the villains do not find out brother’s real identity. Thus, there are many engaging events to participate in along the way.

It all starts with the main character having an almost perfect life, given the fact that you have a successful news show and you are about to marry the mayor’s daughter. However, your brother the superhero gets kidnapped by some villains with superpowers, so the adventure begins when you decide to pose as Swashbuckler and con everyone in the city with your clever ruse.

Many things happen along the way, but most events are left up to you when it comes to how the character approaches them. Hence, you can try to keep the charade for as long as possible and fool every in the process, or just drop the act and take the story in a totally different direction. You can also try to romance your brother’s beloved, or just stay faithful to your future wife.

Naturally, there are many possible endings to reach, and they all depend on the decisions you make over the course of the story. Sometimes it’s obvious where the dialog options lead, but other times you might get a few interesting surprises. Hence, it’s almost mandatory to play through the game multiple times in order to see everything it has to offer.

In the end, The Hero Unmasked! is anything but original in terms of gameplay mechanics, but the story is what matters in the genre, and it certainly has what it takes in that regard. Hence, you can get many hours of entertainment out of the game if you do multiple playthroughs.
