The usual sci-fi stories usually feature vicious aliens with total disregard for other forms of life, so the gimmick is rather old at this point. Thankfully, people always come up with new ideas in the genre, and some of these ideas are pretty wild. As long as you keep an open mind and you like to imagine outlandish concepts, the genre has a lot to offer, regardless of whether you choose books, movies or video games.

The Fleet is an interactive, text-based adventure game with role-playing mechanics, in which you get to control the story scene-by-scene and make decisions that affect the plot in a variety of ways. There are no graphics to distract you, but this can also be a drawback if you are used to having some kind of visual aid in order to truly enjoy the adventure. On the other hand, the genre has its loyal supporters even today.   The game at hand takes place in a distant future where different races battle for supremacy in the vastness of space, but your character is not very interested in this conflict. Instead, your goal is to get back to your home planet and defeat the invaders that have occupied it. The journey takes you through a variety of interesting situations along the way, and there are quite a few possible endings too.

Every scene you are presented with has multiple possible actions you can undertake, depending on how you want the story to evolve. Each one of these choices affects the conclusion of the plot, so you can easily go through the game a handful of times without reaching the same ending. Even so, it would appear that the overall adventure is quite short, so the complexity is not quite up there.   The lack of graphics might prove to be a no-go for some players, especially if you are a bit younger and you are used to the finer things in life. However, the story is what counts the most in such cases, so it shouldn’t matter as much if you enjoy reading and using your imagination to create the game world in your mind. It also helps you choose a nice soundtrack to keep you company.

When it’s all said and done, The Fleet can be a bit too short for players to get in the right mood, but it definitely has an interesting story. Hence, you should have a blast with the game if you like sci-fi tales and the ability to change the plot with your actions.
