The Enigma of Life After Death

Life after death is a pretty interesting topic, especially since every culture has its own version of what happens to people after they die. Whether they turn to dust or go to another dimension, everything has been debated and analyzed. Obviously, it’s still pretty much impossible to tell what comes after, if anything, mainly because no one can come back to tell us.
The Enigma of Life After Death is a retro RPG in which you play the role of a skeleton waking up in a morgue, with no memory of how he dies or why was he resurrected. In case you haven’t already guessed, there are quite a few similarities with Planescape Torment, but the game is pretty different in many other regards. Granted, this is barely a prototype, so it lacks a great deal of content at the moment.
Necromancy seems to have something to do with your resurrection, as it is indicated by the strange blood ritual you stumble upon just in the next room. The story is more intriguing than that, on the other hand, because you can also see into the next world, as well as communicate with spirits. Sadly, most spirits speak a weird language, which should be fully integrated into the complete game.
Most of the game revolves around exploration and speaking with other spirits, although you also have the option to attack if you don’t feel like talking. You can learn a lot more by using your words instead, especially in the beginning when you know next to nothing about where you are or what happened to you. Thankfully, some of the spirits are friendly and helpful.
As for the graphics, the level design is quite impressive, especially since it features some unique landscapes and the ability to switch between worlds. Besides the color theme change, you also get to see a few invisible objects when you make the switch. The music is nice as well, but you shouldn’t expect hours of content from a prototype.
Even if it borrows most of its ideas from Planescape Torment, The Enigma of Life After Death can still make quite an impression, especially if the game world is detailed enough. Thus, it’s certainly worth keeping an eye on.
