Certain game genres seem to be immune to the passage of time, given the fact that they are still enjoyed by gamers even if the basic idea has remained the same over the decades. RPGs are somewhat part of this category, although not all of them. Hence, while titles like The Witcher push the genre into the future, others try to keep it in the past, preferably with retro graphics as well.
The End of an Age: Fading Remnants is a top-down JRPG in which you get to relive the golden age of the genre and enjoy some of the same cliches, which is not a bad thing at all. Innovation is important, but nostalgia can be just as powerful sometimes. Hence, the game is a mix of Final Fantasy and western RPGs, which means that it features turn-based battles with an ATB system, as well as top-down map exploration.
The story has a pretty basic premise, but it gets more complex as you manage to move on and complete quests. In essence, you have to save the world from evil and destruction, but you also get to meet a variety of interesting characters and hear their stories as well. It’s not a very memorable universe, unfortunately, but it’s quite interesting at first.
One of the most annoying features of the game is the random encounter element, because at any time you can run into enemies while you are exploring the map. The combat is repetitive and mostly uneventful, so the plethora of fights gets on your nerves after a while. Granted, the turn-based system allows you to take your time and try different tactics, but since the enemies are not very smart, it’s not as exciting as it sounds.
As it usually goes in RPGs, it’s possible to pick up all sorts of items and equip your characters with exquisite gear, although the quality of the weapons and armors you find increases over time as you manage to defeat stronger enemies. Lastly, the graphics are as basic as they can get for an RPG Maker game, and the interface is hardly modified as well.
In the end, The End of an Age: Fading Remnants does not offer you anything new or exciting in the gameplay department, but maybe the world and the story might speak to you. Hence, if you do not mind repetitive encounters and a lack of depth when it comes to combat, the game can easily keep you busy for a few hours.
