The Charnel House Trilogy is a point and click adventure game developed and published by Owl Cave.
Some of the point and click adventures out there are really interesting and unique, even if the they don’t have extremely high production values. This is proof that you don’t always need huge teams of developers and massive studios to come up with something that will keep players glued to the screen. Sometimes all you need is a good soundtrack and a story that will keep people playing, even if other aspects of the game don’t really rise to the occasion.
Ordinarily, you would give this game a second look after seeing some of the screenshots, but those imagines don’t do it justice. The screenshots don’t capture the atmosphere and the soundtrack, which in the case of The Charnel House Trilogy are making half of the experience. All I’m saying is that it’s a good game and it deserves a second chance.
The developers from Puuba say that players will get to see three characters in action, a young woman, doctor Harold Lang, and Alex Davenport. Each of the characters have their own stories and their own challenges, all happening on board a train that’s heading towards Augur Peak.
From a technical point of view, the game is not impressive in any way. The graphics are just there, and the voice acting is good, but it sounds like it’s been recorded in a non-professional setting. Somehow, when you start to play all of these problems, which are visible from the start, begin to fade away really quick.
Players soon need to know what’s happening and how are all the characters connected. The fact that they are on a moving train and that something seems to be off at all times, contributes to the overall feeling of uneasiness.
Also, the puzzle elements used to confound the players are quite difficult, and they are certain to challenge even the more seasoned gamers. The only problem seems to be a large amount of backtracking involved in solving the puzzles.
