Every shooter must have its own gimmick in order to be memorable, otherwise it’s difficult to stay excited when you feel like you have already played through everything before. Granted, it’s hard to come up with new ideas in terms of gameplay, especially after thousands of developers have tried their luck in the genre and explored so many possibilities.
The Cerberus Project: Horde Arena FPS is a first-person shooter with colorful graphics and retro mechanics, in which the goal is to kill everything that moves and make it to the end of each stage alive. Although this sounds like every other arcade shooter out there, the high difficulty level provides you with a truly challenging experience, even if you are a veteran of the genre.
To begin with, the stages are fairly open and maze-like, so it takes a while to get used to the layout. You start with a fairly weak weapon, namely a shotgun that can only shoot one bullet before requiring a reload. Naturally, better weapons become available later on, but it takes a while to learn the ropes and survive for long enough to get further into the game.
The other great thing about The Cerberus Project: Horde Arena FPS is the melee weapon system, especially since you have total control over how your character handles the sword. This makes the encounters incredibly visceral, although it takes a while to grow accustomed to the mechanics. To make things worse, the enemies come in huge numbers as well, so there’s always something trying to kill you.
The levels are fairly intriguing as well, mainly because they are open to exploration most of the time. They also contain teleporters that make it easy to jump from one end of the map to the other, which comes in handy when you have to escape enemies. As far as the graphics are concerned, the colorful style may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but at least it’s different from all the games that look the same.
Even if The Cerberus Project: Horde Arena FPS is still a bit too unpolished at this point, things can certainly get a lot better in the future. Hence, it’s nice to see a developer trying something new for a change, especially in a genre as popular as this one.
