The Captain Demo
Solve puzzles and figure out how to return home in this sci-fi adventure game with point-and-click mechanics #Adventure game #Retro adventure #Point and click #Adventure #Puzzle #Solve
Games like Day of the Tentacle and Monkey Island are still relevant even today, and the reason for this is that they told great stories. Besides the puzzles, the story and the characters are the most important elements in a point-and-click adventure game. Even if the gameplay mechanics are rather sketchy or they don’t work as intended, people are more than happy to put up with it as long as they listen to a great tale.
The Captain is a retro adventure game in which you have to solve puzzles and find a way to advance the story using nothing but a few simple actions. Your character can only observe, pick up, use or talk to objects, which means that your options are rather limited. On the other hand, there are other ways to interact with the game, depending on the circumstances and the mission you are undertaking.
Speaking of which, the story is quite vague at the moment, but it should be enough to captivate your attention. Hence, you play the role of a Captain Welmu, who’s on a science mission to Mars. However, things do not go according to plan on the road, which causes him to wake up one hundred light years away from home. Naturally, the ultimate goal is to find a way to return home in a more manageable time frame.
To stay true to the genre, most of your time is spent solving puzzles and figuring out how to advance the story. You can pick up items and store them in your inventory, as well as combine them to obtain more useful objects. Not only that, but you can also talk and interact with other characters, as well as influence the plot by making certain decisions. In short, the adventure should be quite malleable in this regard.
Given the retro theme of the game, it’s only natural that it uses pixel graphics. Although it’s very simple from a technological point of view, the artwork is actually quite striking and atmospheric. The characters may be just a handful of colorful pixels, but the dialog brings them to life and makes it a lot easier to identify with them. Humor has a lot to do with it as well, and there’s plenty of it to go around.
Although it’s rather early to tell for sure, The Captain has the necessary elements to turn into a fan favorite once it is complete. Thus, as long as the developers keep adding content and developing the story, this is definitely a game to keep an eye on.
