SuperGrid Demo
Tackle a simple 3D platformer and make use of a prototyping tool with this UE4-powered game. #3d platformer #Exploration game #Level creation #Platformer #Explore #Arcade
Designing video games is a lot easier nowadays than it ever was, thanks to a variety of free tools that are built to cater even to complete novices. Not only that, but some of these tools do not even require you to know how to code or design 3D objects, which is that much more impressive. On the other hand, this only works if you do not want to create something more complex.
SuperGrid is both a game and a tool that aims to help developers create their games a lot faster and easier. In essence, this is a platformer created in Unreal Engine 4 that allows you to quickly put together prototypes and demonstrative levels using a variety of cubes and other three-dimensional shapes. Not only that, but you can even create your own platformer inside the game.
As such, this only works for Unreal Engine 4, as it should be obvious by now. The platformer included is about as simple as it gets, since it only features a couple of jumps and a demonstration of how to use the available blocks to create something fun. As a matter of fact, the mechanics are not very polished, but you can get past that if your goal is to learn something and not worry about quality yet.
Another fun thing you can do is use your own images as textures for in-game objects, as it would be possible with the actual UE4 editor. It’s a tad easier here, on the other hand, not to mention the fact that you do not have to worry about texture stretching when you are actively manipulating the objects you design. It’s a very useful feature, although it might prove counterintuitive to actual 3D designers.
Other than that, everything else is courtesy of the superb Unreal Engine 4, since you can easily take advantage of one of the most advanced platforms available at the moment and let your imagination roam free. As always, the lighting and the material simulations are exquisite, making everything get incredibly close to photorealism.
All things considered, SuperGrid is still a long way from finished, but it’s already shaping up to be a pretty useful and handy tool. Hence, if you want something simple to help you get started with Unreal Engine 4, this might just be the way to do it.
