There are many interesting video game genres out there, not to mention various niches that are obviously not very well known. On the other hand, most of them adhere to a standard set of rules when it comes to core gameplay mechanics, which is why you can more or less expect a certain type of experience from a first-person shooter or a racing game.
Super Street Skate is a third-person skating game that takes place in a procedurally-generated city and plays a lot like a roguelike RPG. Obviously, such a combination of genres and ideas sounds ludicrous on paper, but it’s anything but that after a few minutes of gameplay. In fact, you might start wondering why didn’t anyone else think of it before, because the idea has tons of potential.
As such, you start by creating a character and customizing his/her appearance. You can either use roller skates or a skateboard, depending on what you enjoy the most. There are some differences between the two when it comes to movement, but it’s not a huge transition. After you are done with your character, the game allows you to start exploring a random city and do your best to survive while collecting power-ups and fighting bad guys.
Just like in a classic roguelike, enemies appear randomly around the city, and they are pretty aggressive if you get near them. Some have flamethrowers that cause a lot of damage, while others are more content with the usual pistol. However, you can pick up a variety of power-ups along the way, which provide you with an advantage when it comes to combat. It’s also possible to just keep rolling past the enemies and not worry about them at all.
Boss fights are planned in the final version as well, which should be interesting to see. So far, the gameplay is not bad at all, but it needs more work before it sheds some of the problems. As such, there’s no real sense of speed when you are skating, which is kind of a bummer. There’s no way to fall down either, apparently, but you can lose hit points if you bump into a car.
When it’s all said and done, there’s a lot more work ahead before Super Street Skate is ready for the market, but the developers are doing a very fine job so far. Hence, if you are aching for something new and exciting, this may very well be the answer to your prayers. In fact, you can support the developers right now by participating in their Kickstarter campaign.
