Whenever gamers think of platformers, they usually picture classics like Metroid, Super Mario or Sonic, each one of which added something to the genre. Hence, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that most modern platformers take their inspirations from the classics, even if the developers sometimes try to come up with new concepts as well. In fact, there’s even a sub-genre known as Metroidvania, which should tell you how important those two games were back in the day.

Super Skelemania is a 2D platformer that puts you in the role of a skeleton trying to make his way through a variety of dark environments in order to find treasure and other secrets. The game is also bursting with action at every step, because there are all sorts of enemies you must bypass in order to make progress. However, most of your time is spent jumping and avoiding obstacles.

Exploration is also a big part of Super Skelemania, mainly because there are usually multiple exits out of every map, and some of the secrets are hidden in there. Not only that, but you are often forced to go back to a previous map in order to make use of a new power that allows you to explore zones that were out of reach before. Thus, this feels more like an adventure than your typical platformer.

As mentioned before, every level features at least a few enemies you have to watch out for, some of which are pretty deadly. You are often required to make precise jumps in order to clear some of the obstacles, although certain power-ups come in handy as well, such as the ability to perform a dive in the middle of a jump. Since these power-ups are unlocked gradually, the experience is constantly changing, which helps with keeping boredom at bay.

In terms of graphics, Super Skelemania is actually pretty impressive, especially when you consider the basic retro style used throughout the game. The designers have achieved a lot with simple pixel artwork techniques, and each map feels unique in its own way. You can easily enjoy the game on full-HD resolutions without hurting your eyes in the process.

When it’s all said and done, Super Skelemania is a very polished and enjoyable platformer, not to mention challenging. Thus, it’s nice to see a proper indie production for a change, one that doesn’t sacrifice gameplay quality in exchange for a silly story or flashy graphics.
