Super Monster Jam Demo

Zombies are the simplest plot generators out there, since they don’t even need a background story in order to be explained. Hence, they can just appear on the screen at some point and everyone knows how and why. On the other hand, it’s a whole different thing to come up with a good zombie plot, because everyone is trying to do that for a few years now.

Super Monster Jam is a top-down shooter in which you have to clear room after room of zombies and make sure you are not bitten in the process. In case everything looks familiar from the first few minutes of gameplay, that’s because the game is heavily inspired by Hotline Miami, and it’s actually the same formula. However, the thugs are replaced with zombies, and they move a lot slower.

There’s no background story to talk about, just a series of rooms and houses you must clear, with the end goal being to survive. It’s a bit disappointing, given the fact that Hotline Miami had a very interesting plot that evolved in the background and kept you guessing. There’s nothing like that here, which means that you are in danger of getting bored rather quickly.

One thing everyone loved about HM was the incredibly hardcore difficulty level, since it usually took less than a second for everything to go wrong and having to restart the level. However, at least you couldn’t blame the controls, because everything worked right from the first try. Unfortunately, this is not the case with Super Monster Jam, since the controls respond awkwardly and the movement is bugged for some reason.

Sometimes you’ll die for no reason as well, probably because zombies clip through walls and kill you from another room. It’s way too dark most of the time, and the weapons react slowly as well. To make things worse, the AI is pretty slow too, which makes it that much more frustrating when you get killed because of bugs or terrible game design.

In the end, Super Monster Jam could easily be a lot better with a bit of work, but right now it’s not the type of game you want to waste your time with. Hence, unless you have nothing better to play, this can wait until the developer makes some adjustments.
