Bomb defusal is obviously not as simple as it is usually depicted in movies, mainly because no one would leave the wires hanging from outside so that everyone can meddle with them. Also, it is quite simple to use same-colored wires to avoid the red vs blue conundrum. However, blockbusters would not be the same without a sweaty hero saving everyone at the last second with nothing but a pair of scissors.

Super Bomb Rush! is an arcade game in which your goal is quite simple: defuse as many bombs as you can without making any mistakes. The rules are easy to follow as well, although you need good reflexes to keep up with the fast pace. In short, you have to press the appropriate buttons in the correct sequence and do it all in under five seconds, otherwise the bombs explode.

There are multiple game modes to choose from, but only one is available in the beginning, which is kind of a bummer. In order to unlock the others, such as versus or co-op, you have to amount a certain number of points, which can only be achieved by farming the arcade mode first. It’s not a very good idea to trap people with this kind of schemes, because they’ll get bored and give up in a rush.

Not all bombs can be defused by simply following the key sequence. The mechanics get progressively more difficult along the way and more rules are added, such as longer sequences, inverted keys and so on. Hence, things change rather quickly, which keeps you engaged and always unsure about what you should be doing. Since you only have five seconds to think about it, practice is all that can help you get better.

However, you’ll be disappointed to notice that the defusals are the same every time you start the arcade mode. Hence, you can memorize the sequences and just not care about skill at all. Even more sad is the fact that you’ll get bored very quickly, since there’s nothing to take you by surprise, at least not in the beginning. Things might change in the future, seeing how the game is still in Early Access, so we can only wait.

In the end, Super Bomb Rush! is not a bad game, but it needs some work before it can be worthy of your money. It takes too long to unlock the other game modes, the non-random levels get boring, and it would also be nice for the backgrounds to change every once in awhile.
