You find yourself trapped in your small quarters, with no sign of any guards or people around for a good couple of days. Your rations are running low, your health is falling apart and you need to know what’s going on. After finding a way out through a small vent, you quickly come to realize that you might be the only survivor from what looks to be a massacre.

Subterrain is an indie game that doesn’t necessarily put a very original idea in front of you but packaging and delivery are very well thought out. Not only does it look very good, it also provides fluid animations, solid and well polished gameplay as well as a fair simulation of what it takes to survive.

After fighting plenty of zombies, mutants, or whatever they are, you won’t just need to patch yourself up with a bandage or enjoy the healing from a medkit. Health can be affected by thirst, starvation, cold, lack of oxygen so throughout the game you will constantly have to monitor your stats to make sure you’re not walking around bleeding to death or falling to the ground from lack of nutrition.

Survival supplies aren’t all that rare but they do run out fast and you need to use them wisely. You can find a fridge packed with delicious beers and drink them all in a few seconds, but there’s no guarantee that you will find another means of hydration anytime soon in the future. Overall, survivability is well implemented and balanced.

Apart from finding basic supplies, in Subterrain you can also use several crafting tables to create new items or improve those that you already have. There are weapon blueprints to use, armors to create and various other power-ups to obtain.

Apart from that, you can also use extracted fragments from enemies and research their biological structure to engineer mutations that you can use to increase your capabilities and survival chances. Everything has a cost and you have to look very carefully under every bed or table to find what is need for crafting.

On a closing note, Subterrain is by all means a game that’s definitely worth taking a look at, even in its very early stages of development. It already features a lot of well planned out content, and even though it’s not a fast-paced game that keeps you on your toes every second, it’s not tedious at all either.
