Fantasy scenarios can be the perfect solution for when you are feeling particularly stressed or bored, given the fact that they allow you to instantly teleport to a different world and play someone else’s role. However, these worlds must be convincing enough in order to help you escape for a while, otherwise you end up being even more bored than when you started.
Subliminal Realms: Call of Atis is a hidden object adventure game that features the classic HOPA formula and a story full of adventures and colorful environments. There are no new elements when it comes to gameplay, given the fact that most of your time is spent analyzing the scenes in search of useful objects, but at least each location is different and very detailed.
The whole journey starts with the main character visiting her husband in the hospital after he was attacked on his diving boat. As it happens, he found a weird artifact at the bottom of a lake, and this artifact apparently allows people to travel to other worlds. However, he somehow gets trapped into this artifact, and it’s your job to find and rescue him before it’s too late.
Most of the puzzles require you to solve a mini-game of some sort, such as putting a broken object back together, or pushing a few buttons in the correct order. Each mini-game has its charm, but it might evaporate after a while if you play for too long. Thankfully, at least they are not very challenging, so you do not have to worry about getting stuck.
Even if that does happen at some point, the hint system allows you to quickly get a glimpse at the correct solution, and you can even skip puzzles entirely if you wish to do so. Lastly, the graphics are not bad at all, and the worlds you explore are actually very intriguing and full of interesting landscapes. The soundtrack is not bad either, but the voice acting can be a tad too disappointing sometimes.
Although Subliminal Realms: Call of Atis fails to provide you with any original elements when it comes to gameplay mechanics, the story and the puzzles are engaging enough to distract you for a few hours. The graphics are fairly nice, especially when it comes to the environments.
