Adventure games are designed to make you lose yourself in a different world for a few hours, and some of them really get the atmosphere right. Granted, the gameplay mechanics must be engaging as well, which is why most adventure flicks feature point & click mechanics that help a lot with immersion. Puzzles are a great way to keep players busy as well.

Subject 13 is a point & click adventure game in which you play the role of a professor trying to get out of a sticky situation. The whole thing is designed to come as close to a classic adventure game as possible, which means that most of your time is spent investigating scenes and interacting with various objects. Naturally, puzzles are part of the fun too, and they are not very simple most of the time.

The main character is Franklin Fargo, and he is a physics professor living a quiet life, who one day gets into a bit of trouble. Hence, he wakes up in a strange facility that seems to be underground, and where people appear to be conducting weird experiments. Obviously, the whole point is to get out of the facility and solve a couple of mysteries while you are at it.

As mentioned before, puzzles are your main concern, but in order to solve them you have to interact with various objects around the environment. Unlike with a regular HOPA, you are free to move around the levels, although you do that by clicking on the ground. You can either interact with objects or examine them, although sometimes it can be pretty tricky to spot them.

The graphics are nothing to write home about either, especially since everything feels and looks a tad too stiff most of the time. However, the scenes are very detailed and atmospheric, especially since you can look at them from multiple angles as you move along. The soundtrack is very moody as well, so it shouldn’t be hard to really get lost in the experience.

In the end, Subject 13 might be a tad too complex for the casual fans of the genre, but it’s certainly intriguing and engaging all the way through. Thus, it definitely deserves a shot if you are aching for a challenge and a neat mystery.
