Strategic Command WWI Breakthrough is a turn-based strategy game part of the Strategic Command series and it obviously concerns itself with the first World War. In essence, you get to play through the entire conflict, with either one of the two factions. However, it is also possible to choose a slightly smaller scenario and be over in under an hour, depending on your skills.

Hence, the grand campaign goes from 1914 all the way to 1918, which means that the entire conflict is presented and you have to tackle all the different historical events along the way. You can also play on specific fronts and go in detail when it comes to specific struggles, such as the Ludendorff Offensive, or the March on Paris. Naturally, the time scales differ, but the mechanics remain the same regardless of how many units are involved.

The map may be using the old hex grid system, but it is still quite large and detailed. It also includes bits of North America, Iceland, North Africa, and a small portion of Asia. As for Europe, each major city is accurately represented, along with borders, landmarks, and details about the nations. Coupled with the nice graphics engine, the visual aspect is pretty much spot on, for a wargame.

In case you are worried about the difficulty level, you’ll be happy to know that the game can accommodate almost any players, regardless of previous experience with wargames. The interface is intuitive and quite simple, not to mention the fact that you can set up the scenarios before you begin and change the rules in order to fit your experience.

All things considered, Strategic Command WWI Breakthrough features enough depth to make a veteran happy, but it can also be dumbed down enough levels to accommodate a newcomer as well. Hence, the game is very versatile and everyone can enjoy it, as long as you are prepared to learn a thing or two.
