Although people think about Germany, the French, and the British when the second World War is mentioned, a lot of it took place across the Pacific as well, where countries like Japan and the United States fought for quite a bit before the atomic bomb put an end to it all. Thus, although history talks more about Europe and what transpired there, many lives were lost on the other continent as well.

Storm Over the Pacific is a turn-based strategy game that provides you with the opportunity to lead one of the countries that were part of the skirmishes in the Pacific and try to make it to the end of the war. There are over two dozen nations to choose from, each one of which has certainly advantages and disadvantages, depending on the size and strength of their armies.

Scenario-wise, the game comes packed with plenty of them, all of which are thoroughly researched from a historical point of view and they are more than able to provide you with a challenge. Not only that, but it is also possible to customize them beforehand, in order to choose exactly how stronger the AI to be, as well as many other settings regarding resources, technology, and units.

Once you are actively playing one of the scenarios, you start to notice that the gameplay could have used a lot of improvements, especially when it comes to balancing and the underlying mechanics. Hence, a lot of things do not work like they should, while some of the components are way too unclear to make use of properly.

Speaking of which, the user interface is more than tricky to figure out at first, even if you go through the tutorial. After you get used to it, it may start to make a bit more sense, but the initial impression sticks with you for a while. As far as the graphics are concerned, they are as simple as you would expect from a wargame, but there’s enough detail to make the experience not feel too cheap either.

All things considered, Storm Over the Pacific is definitely not the best you can get in the genre, since there are much better titles out there, focusing on the Pacific theatre alone. However, if you do not have the possibility to choose something else, then this can probably do the job just as well, as long as you do not go in with high expectations.
