It’s difficult to get into the mood if the plot is not properly written, especially in a genre like horror or adventure, where it’s important for the players to be in the right state of mind. However, it’s not easy to create a perfect blend of gameplay elements.

Stories Untold is a collection of text-based stories that challenge you to investigate all sorts of interesting cases and solve them using text commands. In case you are not familiar with the genre, it might take a while to understand how to play, but it’s worth the trouble if you like a good story. It’s a lot more difficult to be distracted when there are no graphics to worry about.

Each story is unique when it comes to plot and the characters, but they all feature some kind of mystery you have to solve. Some take you to your childhood home in a deserted town, while others have a much more dark theme. The whole thing is coated in a layer of 80s nostalgia, complete with a retro interface and synth-wave soundtrack to keep you in the proper mood.

The gameplay is about as simple as it gets, given the fact that all you have to do is read the text on the screen and decide what to do. There’s usually some kind of clue in the aforementioned text, so all that’s left is to input the right commands depending on the situation. Sometimes you just have to use various items around you, while other times it’s important to interact with objects from your inventory.

Since there are no actual graphics except for the cozy background you have to stare at for the entire duration of the game, it might get a tad boring after a while. However, it depends on how much you are invested in the story, because the visuals do not matter that much if your imagination is in a different world. Moreover, the great soundtrack helps a lot with the atmosphere as well.

In the end, Stories Untold might not be everyone’s cup of tea, especially since modern gamers are not particularly fond of text-based experiences. However, the quality of the stories should be enough to keep you entertained for a few hours.
