Most anime series deal with fantasy and science fiction themes, so nothing should be very surprising anymore. Dragon Ball Z set the standard for anything involving martial arts and fighting, while plenty of other titles left a mark on their respective genres. The same goes for video games, because there’s always someone leading the industry in some regard.
Stones Of Light & Dark is not a masterpiece in any way and it can barely pass as mediocre in most aspects, but the younger audience probably can have a bit of fun with it. In fact, that may very well be just because the team behind the game is just as young, since at least that much becomes obvious after reading the dialog and hearing the outline of the story for the first time.
As it happens, the entire plot revolves around a 16-year old boy who wakes up on his birthday and starts doing some chores. After a few small quests meant to familiarize yourself with the environment and the general mood, you find out that the boy in question has superpowers, a discovery that prompts him to leave on a soul-searching quest almost immediately. Hence, don’t expect too much depth from the plot at any point during the game.
Whenever you stumble into a hostile creature, the game switches perspectives and you jump into the turn-based mode. Hence, just like Final Fantasy and all the other JRPGs released since the beginning of time, every character gets his turn to make a move, whether it’s an attack or a special ability capable of dealing massive amounts of damage. The enemies strike in turns as well, so at least the system is pretty balanced.
Visually, there’s nothing memorable about the game, especially not since everything is formed out of basic textures that don’t even make sense sometimes. Not only that, but you may find it rather difficult to find the exit from a house sometimes because they are not very obvious once you enter a building.
All things considered, Stones Of Light & Dark barely has any strong points that could convince you to play it for more than a few minutes. In a nutshell, the dialog is childish, the story is awful, and the gameplay is too boring and repetitive even from the first couple of quests. Thus, you’d be much better off trying something else.
