Steam and Metal Demo

Steam and Metal is a side-scrolling shooter set in a steampunk world. It’s developed and published by a studio named AvrDragon.

There are more than enough 2D side-scrolling shooters out there and many of them have some sort of connection with the steampunk world. It’s a common theme, which means that some manage to pull it off, and most don’t. Fortunately, Steam and Metal is part of the first category, meaning that the steampunk connection is not forced in any way.

It’s not enough to connect advanced technologies to an older world and call it steampunk. Developers also have to capture the feeling of such a world, which is not an easy task. It often happens that their creation is just a monster that has neither of the qualities of the two worlds that have been combined.

Players take on the role of a young woman that’s trying to avenge her father’s death and to recover the stolen plans of a revolutionary new motor that was supposed to change the world. The story is a little bit more complicated than that, but that’s the gist of it and players don’t really need more explanations than that.

The demo level only comes with the first level, which is pretty short, but it’s immediately noticeable just how difficult the game is and what you need to do to stay alive.

The good news is that the players have a health meter in Steam and Metal, and it would be impossible to survive without one. If the game had one hit damage, it wouldn’t have been possible for players to survive the first minute.

Shooting down enemies will generate currency, which you need to pick up as much as possible, and various power-ups are also provided from time to time. The most important is, of course, the health, which is pretty much mandatory.

Each level ends with a boss fight, which is usually much more difficult than anything you have encountered in the level until now. He’s not coming alone and has droves of enemies.

Steam and Metal is a fun and entertaining side scrolling shooter with only one issue. The color palate is a little bit bland, and there isn’t enough contrast between the enemies and the background.
