Simulation games that allow you to build stuff and watch over individuals have always been successful, as the Sims series can attest. However, the mechanics must be quite sturdy in order for the game to appeal to the masses, because every mistake can ruin the immersion and it is pretty difficult to pretend you are having fun when the gameplay is not in tune with the atmosphere.

StarTopia is a pretty unique game concept, even if it borrows some of the elements from old classics such as Dungeon Master and the like. However, when you get right down to it, the title features more than plenty of original ideas to keep you invested in the action, even if some of them do not work exactly as planned and you may run into some trouble every now and again.

As such, your primary goal is to build and take care of a space station, which is inhabited by a wide variety of alien races. Not only that, but each race has certain needs and requirements, beside the fact that some do not get along very well with others. Hence, you must balance everything out as well as you can, although it is obviously pretty impossible and hilarity ensues along the way.

Each station has three different decks you need to properly organize, each one of which is dedicated to certain activities and functions. However, the greatest challenge is to get everyone to live in harmony with each other, which is way more difficult than you think. However, with a bit of ingenuity on your part and a lot of work, the task is not at all impossible.

Since the game came out quite a few years ago, the visual quality of the graphics engine is nothing to stand in awe of, but it’s pleasant enough not to be distracting. With all the things you have to keep an eye on at all times, you’ll barely have any time to pay attention to how stuff looks. Plus, the camera comes in handy whenever you need to have a better look at something.

While StarTopia could have used a bit more polish in some regards, it still came out brilliantly in the end, especially since you have a lot of freedom when it comes to the course of action you choose. Thus, the game can be the perfect choice for any sim fan out there and it features enough content to keep you busy for a long time.
