Star Wars is among the most easily recognizable franchises in the world, especially when it comes to the technology featured in the movies, such as spaceships, light sabers or droids. However, there is much more to the Star Wars universe than shiny swords and beeping robots, such as entire chapters and back stories about various planets and colonies around the galaxy.
Star Wars: Episode I - Battle for Naboo, as the name implies, takes its inspiration from the Phantom Menace part of the series and it revolves around fight between the Royal Security Forces and the Trade Federation. Obviously, most of the action takes place on Naboo, which is the name of a planet and the home of your main character, Gavyn Sykes.
The story progresses as you manage to pass each level, although you should not expect deep revelations or exquisite character development over the course of the game, since everything is aimed toward the gameplay, rather than the writing part. Despite that, it is quite admirable that the background story makes sense as well and it even includes a variety of Star Wars references along the way.
Since most of the game is spent flying a spaceship and shooting at other vehicles, the mechanics have been refined in order to make the experience as smooth and as enjoyable as possible. However, the controls are not very responsive and you might end up not being able to properly control your ship at certain times, which might get frustrating after a while.
From a technical standpoint, the game manages to look quite nice, even if the graphics engine might show its age a bit and the models may lack the same degree of detail that's expected this day and age. A lot of work went into the cutscenes and the vehicles themselves, since they are modeled as close to the ones from the movies as possible.
Star Wars: Episode I - Battle for Naboo is definitely a good game, even if some parts of it do not function as they should and they might hurt the experience on the long run. You can get used to the controls after a while and the dogfights become quite intense, especially if you happen to be a Star Wars fan as well.
