Star Trek: Klingon Academy Demo

Whether you are a fan or not, you must admit that Star Trek managed to create a worldwide phenomena that lasted for decades and it does not look like it’s going anywhere soon. However, there are many other spin offs out there, not all of which managed to capture the spirit of the TV show and failed to please the dedicated fan base in one way or another.

Star Trek: Klingon Academy is a space combat simulator in which you get to play the role of a young Klingon warrior as he trains to become a recruit for the army. By the end of the game, your skills should allow you to maneuver the spaceships well enough to defeat almost everyone, although you will need to do so much earlier than that, otherwise you won’t be able to make it through the war.

The story talks about General Chang and his Elite Command Academy, where the greatest Klingon warriors are trained and seasoned in the art of war. The general is preparing for the inevitable conflict with the United Federation of Planets, which, to no one’s surprise in the game, does indeed happen. Hence, your role is to make it through the academy as a student and fight in the war alongside the other Klingons, in order to defend your planet and race.

When it comes to the actual combat mechanics, things are a bit strange and annoying, since some of the concepts do not work as they should and they end up hurting the experience. Hence, even if the developers wanted to make the gameplay realistic in some way, it doesn’t really feel like it and most of the time you spend it shooting aimlessly, unless you really want to argue with the needlessly complicated user interface.

On the other hand, if you manage to grasp the basics and you can survive the battles, the game is quite pleasant and the atmosphere is just right for a Star Trek flick. There are lasers and imposing spaceships decorating the galaxy, not to mention the various races that are part of the conflict. The graphics are nice as well, although they might not turn any heads this day and age.

Star Trek: Klingon Academy may have its fair share of flaws, but the overall experience is well worth the minor annoyances you have to endure along the way. The story is quite good and you get to revisit some of the most iconic places seen in the TV series.
