Designing unique games is a pretty difficult task nowadays, especially when you consider the fact that there are dozens of them released every day. However, there are still ideas that haven’t been used yet, especially when it comes to gameplay mechanics. New technologies also open up new possibilities, such is the case with virtual or augmented reality.

Squareface is not your typical third-person RPG, especially not when it comes to gameplay and the world in which everything takes place. In essence, the defining characteristic is the fact that the characters are made out of paper, while the environments are actually mundane places like someone’s bedroom. On the other hand, the scale and the weird mechanics are interesting enough to keep you engaged.

As such, you start by creating a character and customizing your appearance by choosing from a variety of face models and clothes. In fact, the character customization options run much deeper than that, but you need to unlock items by playing and hoarding resources. It’s also possible to find all sorts of weapons and even get pets to follow you around and fight alongside you.

Since you are very small when compared to the rest of the environment, the landscapes look very intriguing, but they can also be disorienting sometimes. It doesn’t help that the camera is very difficult to control sometimes, especially when you want to shoot something or aim at an enemy. This is probably going to be refined and fixed by the time the full version rolls out, but right it’s quite the annoyance.

The rest of the game is quite polished, however, and you can tell that the designers have put a lot of work into the environments and the level design. Naturally, they are helped by the amazing capabilities of the Unreal Engine 4, but it still took a lot of talent and dedication to create some of the landscapes. The sound effects are pretty decent as well, although they too need some work before the final version is released.

When it’s all said and done, Squareface has the advantage of being unique in so many regards, which is why it’s going to make a lot of people curious. However, it needs plenty of work before it can be released to the public, because right now it’s a bit too rough to be enjoyable most of the time.
