Fantasy stories always feature some sort of brave hero that saves everyone in the end, and it’s usually someone you wouldn’t expect. Naturally, they get stronger in the process, and video games usually follow the same path when it comes to the main character. Hence, you get to witness the rise of the one who saves the world from evil, or at least something close to that.
Spooky Heroes is a 2D platformer in which you get to choose between multiple characters and use them to explore a rich and dangerous world. Not just that, but you also get to battle various monsters and use your hero’s abilities to defeat them in style. The game has a few flaws when it comes to combat and gameplay mechanics, but the overall experience should be fun enough to keep you playing for a while.
There’s not much of a grand story to talk about, because your goal seems to be the obliteration of evil all across the realm. You fight multiple bosses along the way, so maybe the task is to free the land from their grasp. However, there are eight heroes to choose from, and they all have different play styles. Whether you use a sword, a bow or magic spells, the action is always quite intense and engaging.
You can also visit villages every now and again and use the gold you receive along the way to purchase new items from the armor and item shops. Not only that, but you can also acquire food, sleep at the inn in order to regain your strength, as well as use the bank to store any excess gold. Every village has the same buildings, but the items they sell are different for every location.
There are some issues with the gameplay, on the other hand, mainly because your heroes tend to respond a bit slowly to your input. Whether this is a control or gameplay issue, that’s a bit difficult to know, but it would be much nicer to see quicker response times from the characters and a better collision system as well. It doesn’t matter whether you use a controller or the keyboard, so it might be a deeper issue.
All things considered, Spooky Heroes is actually quite the accomplished indie game, especially if you lower your expectations a little bit. However, it could turn into something much more polished and enjoyable with a bit of work. Until then, you can support the developer by voting for Spooky Heroes on Steam Greenlight.
