Spirits and ghosts are still something people believe in, albeit not as much as in the past. There are many paranormal detectives out there trying to explain weird phenomena with ghosts, and they even have special devices that theoretically allows them to detect unusual energies. There are many haunted places around the world, and they are rarely haunted by good spirits.
Spirit of Revenge: Gem Fury is a hidden object game with a horror twist and a few puzzles to keep you on edge at all times. It’s not very different from most HOGs out there, except for the theme and the fact that the user interface is a bit more difficult to navigate. Other than that, every hidden object fan should be able to figure things out from the first few minutes of gameplay.
The story puts you in the role of a parapsychologist who is also a member of the police, which means that she can investigate criminal cases. In the game at hand, the case revolves around the main character’s sister, whose daughter goes missing along with other children from camp. As it happens, a vengeful spirit seems to be responsible for the deed, which makes the regular police pretty much powerless.
In order to advance from one location to the other, you have to scour the environments for any clues and useful items. Some of these can be used later on, or even combined with other objects, but most are just there so you can have something to click on. Hidden object sequences usually come with a twist as well, but it doesn’t take very long to figure out the gimmicks.
In the graphics department, things could be better, but they are not terrible either. It is quite clear that the technology used is a bit outdated at this point, which is mostly visible in the cutscenes and the interface. The latter can even give you the occasional headache, at least if you do not pay full attention to the buttons on the screen. On top of it all, the voice acting is pretty monotonous as well.
When it’s all said and done, Spirit of Revenge: Gem Fury could’ve been a lot more than it managed to be. Still, you can enjoy the experience if you are patient and forgiving, but the game’s quite clearly got some issues that need to be resolved.
