Every platformer has its charm if it’s designed right, but sometimes it’s difficult to get the mechanics right and make everyone happy. The focus can be on gameplay, the story or the challenge itself, depending on who is expected to enjoy the game. On the other hand, there are projects out there that manage to blend all of these elements together in a harmonious way.
Sparkour is a first-person platformer with parkour elements and a strong multiplayer component, in which your goal is to get to the end of each level first and make it as difficult as possible for the other players to do the same. You can use traps, special abilities and the environment itself in order to be the one that crosses the finish line first.
The interesting combination of racing and parkour means that it’s not enough to jump over gaps and climb on platforms. Instead, you have to do all this as quickly as possible and while outsmarting your opponents, which adds a lot more stress to the equation. Since the game is in alpha at the moment, the mechanics are not particularly refined at the moment, but things are bound to improve in the future.
Joining and creating lobbies is very simple, and although there doesn’t seem to be a single player component as of yet, you can start a multiplayer match alone and enjoy yourself. Each map is unique and poses a different challenge, but the real fun is when the other players add traps and other inconveniences in your way. Granted, you can do the same, so the whole thing is quite exciting.
The graphics won’t blow you out of the water, but they are not bad either. In fact, the nice post-processing effects and the great colors make the whole thing feel fun and unique. Although the levels are simple from a design point of view, you can tell that a lot of work went into them. Not much can be said about the sound as of right now, but that’s yet another chapter that’s going to be improved in later versions.
Sparkour is definitely on the right track, especially in terms of gameplay and mechanics. It needs a bit more work when it comes to the control and level design, but things are bound to improve as the development process continues.
What's new in Sparkour Demo 0.301 Alpha:
- Fixed a bug that would softlock players while trying to join a game in progress.
- In addition, servers are now hidden from the server list if they are in progress. Hopefully this decreases the amount of un-enterable games.
- When clicking "Start Game" on the main menu, you now have a choice between a local game or an online game
- Added a unique default name to every newly created lobby (based off your name, i.e. "caseytube's Game"). This is to help with confusion when multiple games have the same name.
