8bit RPGs have made a comeback lately and people seem to be more open to original story ideas, instead of demanding better and better graphics all the time. Hence, thanks to all the new tools available on the market, everyone can easily put their imagination into practice and create a video game, which is why the indie market is booming right now.
Song of the Myrne is a basic-looking role-playing game that lures you in with humor and permissive gameplay mechanics, as well as nice dialogs and an engaging combat system. As such, it can get away with heavily pixelated graphics, because your attention is usually captured by one of the other elements. Your character also breaks the fourth wall every once in a while.
In the beginning, you get the opportunity to choose between different classes, although you are by no means restricted when it comes to equipment and skills. As such, it is totally possible to play as a mage and toy around with heavy armors in order to stay protected from damage, or blast your enemies with powerful spells from the role of a scrawny archer dressed in a classic green hoodie.
As previously mentioned, things are designed to be as funny as possible, which is why the dialog sequences are usually hilarious and they do not really make too much sense. However, the humor makes the experience that much more memorable and enjoyable, at least if you can taste the jokes and not get annoyed at the occasional plot inconsistency.
The graphics are obviously in 8 bits and they might not make everyone happy, but if you are looking for a dose of nostalgia, this is the game to choose. Naturally, the poor color depth makes it difficult to include too much detail in the environment and the characters, but that doesn’t mean you cannot enjoy the ride. In fact, it’s quite simple to get lost in the gameplay and forget all about the technological limitations.
Even if Song of the Myrne is definitely a lot more casual and relaxed than your average role-playing game, you can still have fun with it for a few hours. In fact, the character customization possibilities let you experiment in a variety of ways, which does wonders for the game’s replay value.
