Solar War Demo
Fight for control in the Solar system and create an interplanetary empire from scratch. #Turn-based strategy #Space strategy #Solar conquest #Strategy #Space #Spaceship
Space strategy is not an insanely popular genre, although there are exceptions. Galactic Civilizations stands out from the rest of the games out there, as does Masters of Orion and a couple of other names. Still, the gameplay is usually designed to be enjoyed by the hardcore community, in the sense that there are many things you have to keep an eye on at all times.
Solar War is a basic-looking turn-based strategy game that allows you to have fun on an interplanetary scale, using huge fleets of spaceships and colonies on various planets from the Solar system. Despite its rugged looks, the game doesn’t make it easy on the players in any regard, since you really have to put your mind to work in order to survive and complete the missions.
Speaking of which, there is a campaign you can undertake in the beginning, complete with a tutorial to get you started on the basics. The campaign in question deals with an alien invasion of the Solar system, and you play the role of the one in charge of stopping them. There are standalone scenarios to toy around with as well, which are shorter and more to the point.
In order to lead the war against the aliens, you’ll need a capable fleet of spaceships. It takes time to build them, but with enough bases and resources, you can easily go up to a scary number when it comes to battleships, cruisers and fighters. Not only that, but you also have the option to design your own ships and include the desired components, although it’s a tad time consuming if you are not a patient person.
As far as the visual quality is concerned, the game is not much to look at, mainly because all the work went into the gameplay instead. Everything is as basic and to the point as possible, including the environments and the ships. During combat, each ship is but a small circle with a tiny symbol to tell you what class it belongs to. Still, it should be enough, especially if you have a rich imagination.
In the end, Solar War is clearly not a game for beginners, since it focuses a lot on efficient combat strategies and good faction management. As long as you are familiar with the genre and you have a lot of time on your hands, this is definitely a good addition to your library.
