Children rarely see the fun in learning new things, especially if numbers and weird symbols are involved in the process. But, just like almost everything else, studying can be made fun and engaging, if you use the right motivational tools. Bright colors and cheerful animals can usually do the trick, even more so if the entire gimmick is interactive and fun.
Smart Panda is a cheerful educational game that enables kids to get acquainted with basic maths concepts and interact with a silly panda bear in colorful environments. The main goal is to answer the questions and respect the time limit, while also avoiding a variety of different critters that try to slow you down, although there is no violence involved.
The children must deal with multiplication, addition, and subtraction, although the operations themselves are not very complicated. Each right answer rewards the players with additional time, which keeps the game from ending before every question is answered. There’s a fixed number of operations the children must deal with, but there’s plenty of time to do so, especially if the answers given are correct.
Fortunately, the game comes with multiple difficulty levels, which means that the challenge can be increased if things appear to be too easy. This obviously affects the time limit and the questions themselves, but the mechanics are a bit annoying and they might hinder your ability to move around quickly when you need to. Every time a creature touches the panda, it becomes stunned for a few seconds, which leaves you exposed to the next wave without being able to do anything about it.
Visually, the graphics may be colorful and joyful, but their quality leaves to be desired. Some of the objects look sketchy at best, while the background landscapes are very simple and unimpressive. The same goes for the sound effects and the music, which is very basic and repetitive. Fortunately, it can be easily turned off from the settings panel, so at least you’re not stuck it with.
Although the game is not perfect and it could have used a lot of refining, Smart Panda can still be a good tool to teach your children a bit of maths in a fun way. Hence, it’s at least worth a try, even if it has plenty of rough edges that might prove to be annoying after a while.
