Being a private investigator seems like a dream job, at least for those who enjoy solving crimes and getting involved in dangerous situations. Unfortunately, such investigators are rarely hired as consultants for the Scotland Yard, and more often hired to spy on unfaithful husbands. Thus, the job becomes monotonous and rather boring pretty quickly, at least for most people.
Sixth Grade Detective is an interactive story in which you play the role of a teenager trying to make a quick buck as a private detective. You’ll take on fun cases like stolen bikes and various other middle school shenanigans, while also trying to keep your social life as interesting as possible. Just like in all the other Choice of Games stories, you are free to choose a gender and name for your character, which affects the rest of the plot.
Speaking of which, everything you say or do affects the story and the way it evolves. Being a detective means that you’ll dig up dirt on people, but it is up to you how this information is used. Depending on whether you like the person in question or not, it is possible to destroy the evidence, confront them about it, or even make it public and let them deal with the aftermath.
Romance is part of the equation as well, although you can avoid it altogether if you don’t feel like dealing with a relationship. As mentioned before, everything you do or say affects the story, but it also affects your character’s stats. Thus, the game keeps track of your respect, corruption and openness levels, which obviously have an effect on how other people perceive you.
Finally, there are no graphics or sounds to speak of in this game either, since it’s a trademark of the studio. Everything is presented in text format, which means that your imagination receives the task of putting it all together in your head. Naturally, this might not sit well with everyone, but as long as you enjoy reading and making decisions, it really shouldn’t be too much of an issue.
All things considered, Sixth Grade Detective is certainly a lot simpler than most Choice of Games titles, but it also very fun and enjoyable. Finding stolen bikes in middle school just sounds like the perfect thing to do when the weather’s not right and you’ve got some spare time on your hands.
