Sometimes the best way to learn about something is through experiment, because no amount or reading or watching from the sidelines is going to prepare you for the real thing. This is true for many things that require a physical approach, because it’s tough to develop reflexes and muscle memory without actually doing the said things. Albeit fairly difficult, such tasks can also be incredibly fun and rewarding.

Sightless is a sidescrolling RPG with retro graphics and simple gameplay mechanics, in which you play the role of a boy as he is exploring his surroundings and learning more about the world he lives in. The game is far from complex in terms of gameplay mechanics, but there are a few dark moments every now and again, not to mention quite challenging whenever you stumble upon certain obstacles.

In case the game’s name didn’t already give it away, the main character lost his sight from a young age. Thus, Sena has all but imagined certain parts of the environment he explores every day, such as the way to school. Although the road probably looks fairly common, Sena imagines that he lives somewhere in the sky, and he is walking on soft clouds every morning.

The gameplay mechanics are designed to be as approachable as possible, which means that you can pretty much jump straight into the game without worrying about learning the ropes. Thus, all you have to do is walk around, interact with a few objects and collect special items as you go along. The demo is pretty short, but you can tell that the overall adventure should be compelling once it is finished.

In terms of graphics, the retro style suits the atmosphere quite well, but sometimes the artwork is a bit too barren, especially when it comes to the backgrounds. Thus, it feels like the world is rather empty, although that may also be because the main character is blind and he did not imagine a very detailed world around him. The music is nothing special either, but it’s far from finished at this point.

Sightless does not look like much right now, but it has the potential to grow into something a lot more interesting. Thus, we can only hope that the developers keep working on the project and expanding the adventure.
