Few mythological creatures received as much attention as werewolves and vampires, especially in the last few years. There are more than enough books, movies and video games on the subject, yet there’s always more of them saturating the market. On the other hand, there’s nothing inherently wrong with the genre, at least as long as the experience is worth the trouble.
Shadow Wolf Mysteries: Curse of Wolfhill Collector's Edition is a hidden object adventure game with an emphasis on atmosphere, since it tries to be creepy at the same time. The series has multiple episodes as well, which means that the storyline is ongoing, at least if you are familiar with the previous installments. Not much has changed in the gameplay department in the meantime, but that’s probably the right decision in the genre.
As such, the story puts you back in the role of a man with the curse of the wolf, which means that he has the ability to turn into a werewolf when the conditions are right. It all starts when the main character’s cousin sends his father the family symbol, which means that he is in danger. Hence, you must help him stay alive, by solving puzzles and using your wolf powers to overcome certain obstacles.
The gameplay revolves around examining every scene for hidden clues, finding useful items and combining them in order to unlock the way forward. There are also actual puzzles to solve every now and again, which involve a variety of mini-games that put your wits to the test. Granted, most of them are not very difficult, but you might find yourself stumped every now and again.
There’s a hint system in place for when that happens, on the other hand, not to mention the fact that you can skip puzzles altogether if you feel overwhelmed. It’s not a very orthodox thing to do in a puzzle game, but games are supposed to be fun, not frustrating. Speaking of which, the artwork is definitely nice, especially when it comes to the scenes you explore and the objects you interact with.
When it’s all said and done, Shadow Wolf Mysteries: Curse of Wolfhill Collector's Edition should satisfy the fans of the series, especially since it’s just more of the same. The attention to detail is definitely a plus when it comes to atmosphere.
