Dating simulators may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but they can be quite distracting and relaxing, as long as you do not get too much into them. The illusion of choice and consequences is shattered by the rewind function, but you can still have a lot of fun by pretending you are someone else, especially since you can basically steer the life of your alter ego into any direction.
Session Summer is a pretty straightforward dating simulator/visual novel, in which you get to play the role of a college student attending summer school, in order to graduate early. As he gets acquainted with his new classmates and teachers, he decides it is about time he found someone to care for as well, which is essentially the purpose of the game and your main goal.
The name of the character can be chosen by you in the beginning, so you can make the story a bit more relatable. Other than that, you are pretty much a regular guy, with a passion for video games and not a whole lot of charisma or experience when it comes to having conversations with other people. As you play along, you can obviously fix all of these flaws, or at least reduce their severity.
To make matters more interesting, your characters has a number of attributes that can be increased over time, by participating in various activities. You can be cool, fit, or rich, depending on what traits you find to be the most important. However, you must also find time to study, because you can only finish the game successfully if you manage to pass the final exams.
There are plenty of interesting characters to meet along the way, both male and female. They each have a different personality, so you might need to use different approaches if you intend on getting closer to them. Speaking of which, the dialogue is of capital importance when it comes to how other people perceive you, so you must choose your answers carefully with every occasion.
In the end, Session Summer is nothing special in the genre, nor does it feature enough unique elements to convince you to choose it over anything else. But, if you do find yourself playing it, the overall experience should be rather pleasing and relaxing, as long as you don’t take it very seriously.
