While the laws of physics are quite permissive with things like time travel and worm holes, they certainly do not allow for wild contraptions like floating continents or anti-gravity machines. However, the world of science-fiction always comes up with fresh ideas on the matter, which is why people are so inclined to enjoy reading about fantastical universes and alternate dimensions.
Septerra Core: Legacy of the Creator is an RPG that tells a mind-bending tale about a world that's controlled and powered by a living computer, while seven continents arranged in layers revolve around the core. Moreover, this computer also emanates a strong force that powers every electrical machine on every continent, while also allowing the people to cast powerful spells using this core energy.
The story is indeed complicated and rather convoluted, but it can be resumed as having the same main idea as any other RPG, which is that the main character, Maya, is on a quest to ultimately save the world from complete destruction. However, due to the fact that the seven continents are completely cut-off from each other most of the time and the people living on each one of them do not really have too much in common, a lot of interesting events unfold once the plot gets going and a few characters happen to work together toward the same goal.
In case you are not familiar with the term, the J stands for Japanese, which means that much of the system is borrowed from titles like Final Fantasy. Hence, although it looks a lot like it's actually turn-based, there are major differences at work, since you can very easily lose your turn if you are not careful and you also have to react in a certain period of time in order to do the desired amount of damage. This is because you can let your abilities charge and deliver stronger attacks, or choose to play a more fast-paced, but weaker style.
On the other hand, this combat system can be extremely slow, because the rounds take a lot to end and the character animation all all based on exact triggers and positions. That way, nothing happens until both characters are in the exact spot they need to be in, which is also true for dialogue or during general map exploration sequences. If you prove to be patient and calm, though, you will be handsomely rewarded with a very nicely written plot and a breath-taking world to explore and investigate.
In the end, it isn't quite clear why did the developers choose the highly impractical and slow JRPG combat system, but Septerra Core: Legacy of the Creator could have been much more enjoyable with a classic interface. Despite that, you can still thoroughly have fun with the game, especially since the isometric graphics look just as good as they always did, regardless of the tiny resolution.
