Being a witch was considered a huge sin a few hundred years ago, especially if you were the kind of witch that brewed potions and dealt with nasty curses. Nowadays, witches have been reduced to fortune tellers and Halloween costumes mostly, although there are places around the world where people are still pretty serious about magic people and witches.

Secrets of Magic: The Book of Spells is a match three game in which you play the role of a girl trying to learn magic in order to rescue her parents, who also happen to be wizards. Except for the theme itself, the rest of the game is not that big on magic and spells, since most of your time is spent matching similar tiles and trying to accomplish various objectives, not to mention hunting for the high score.

The main character’s name is Victoria, and she is a pretty normal girl. However, she one day finds out that her parents are not her real parents, and even more so, her real parents practice powerful magic. They have been kidnapped by evil people, which is why it’s Victoria’s job to learn magic and rescue them from danger by overcoming a variety of nasty obstacles.

If you are familiar with match-3 games, then this one shouldn’t take you by surprise either. The basic gameplay mechanics are more or less the same as in every other game in the genre, except maybe for the upgrades and power-ups you can make use of every now and again. Even so, most of your time is spent moving tiles around and trying to get items to the bottom of the board by clearing the way for them.

In regards to content, you should have more than enough levels to stay busy for a while, not to mention the fact that they are pretty challenging to begin with. Add to that the fact that you have to solve everything with a limited number of moves and you’ve got yourself a pretty engaging challenge. On the other hand, there are much tougher games out there than this one.

In the end, Secrets of Magic: The Book of Spells features everything a match three fan needs to be happy for quite a while. The levels are challenging enough to be worth multiple playthroughs, which is great if you are always hunting for high scores.
