Studying science is not always the most fun of activities, especially when equations and long formulae are involved. Just like every other subject, on the other hand, it can be made to appear more attractive by adding entertainment into the mix. Nowadays, this effect is achieved using the miracle of video games, given the fact that children can quickly put up with a bit of learning, as long as they get to play something.

Science Girls! is an anime-inspired role-playing game that feels a lot like a visual novel, given the fact that most of the action seems to be static. You do get to battle evil plants and use special abilities, however, which makes it a lot more interactive than most visual novels out there. A turn-based combat system is also part of the deal, which makes the experience that much more interesting.

The story starts with you creating a character, although you cannot really customize it too much, except for the name. After a bit of an introduction, it turns out that the school you study at it being attacked by some sort of sentient plants, which posses the ability to swallow humans whole and do all sorts of damage to the school. By teaming up with a few other girls you happen to stumble into, you must tackle the evil together and save everyone from danger.

A lot of emphasis is put on science and learning, because rational explanations are given to explain the unusual life forms you have to deal with. Every girl is an expert in some field, such as biology, or physics, which means that they can each help you understand different concepts. From time to time, you are also required to answer a few questions, although it doesn’t really matter if you get them wrong, because you get the explanation anyway.

The combat is nothing out of the ordinary, given the simple mechanics and the easy-to-grasp model you have to follow. Just like in the Final Fantasy series, each character gets its turn to make a move, which can either be an attack, a defensive stance, or a special ability of some sorts. Experience points are also granted after each successful battle, which allows your girls to level-up and acquire more skills.

In the end, Science Girls! is both fun and interesting, while also being nicely presented in classic anime-style graphics. Moreover, the knowledge you can walk away with is quite interesting, even if not all of it might ever come in handy real-life situations.
