Scavenger

Although modern technology allows for some very impressive graphics and photo-realistic imagery, the purpose of games has remained the same throughout the decades: provide the players with a challenge and plenty of fun in the process. Thus, graphics may not be that important from time to time, especially if you forget yourself for hours at end into one of these games.

Scavenger is a classic arcade game that has you roaming through sci-fi environments in space, at the board of a powerful spaceship with the sole mission of making your way through a dangerous galaxy filled with aliens and various other obstacles. Along the way, you must also collect as many orbs and power-ups as you can, in order to boost the capabilities of the ship and be able to advance to the next stage.

Featuring a nostalgic top-down perspective, the levels are designed in such a way to resemble a maze and they become more and more complicated as you get further. Although they start of mostly devoid of any enemies, the stages quickly swarm with aliens and various defense mechanisms, such as wall-mounted cannons that can quickly annihilate your ship, if you don't take them out first.

As with every other arcade game, the whole purpose is for the levels to get increasingly more difficult as you advance, making it a real challenge to pass them as you head toward the end. This happens to be the case in Scavenger as well, since more and more obstacles await for you with each stage you pass. However, the variety of power-ups that can be collected along the way can prove to be extremely useful, especially in the case of weapon upgrades.

In order to maintain the level design quality, the game uses a powerful game engine to render the environments and the ship itself, as well as very nice-looking textures to go along. The physics engine also does a good job at portraying inertia, since it can get quite tricky to control the space ship at higher speeds, especially if you attempt to turn too sharply.

While Scavenger may not be the most original title out there, it does feature some nice ideas and a large number of levels to explore, which should keep you playing for quite some time. The difficulty level can provide you with a challenge, regardless of how experience you might be.
